Antique prints were produced in exactly the same way as antique maps and this process can be checked in our section About Antique Maps. However the numbers of subjects that were engraved are astounding and one can only mention a few of the very popular areas like Topography (views), Natural History, Military Subjects, Architecture and Fashion. We have thousands of hand coloured engravings, all over 100 years old and can only list a representative few at a time. Please note that the scans are poor because it cannot pick up the engraved straight lines. If you are interested in a particular subject shown here but do not find the place, person, flower, animal etc that you want, please e-mail us at beachmap@sympatico.ca and ask about it. We answer all e-mail promptly, except if away on holiday. All prices are in $US. Please note that we do not update stock in this section of the website. Many may have been sold.

Animals |
We have a large number of prints from The Naturalists Library, published by Sir William Jardine in the 1830s. These popular, little, inexpensive steel engravings with original hand colour covered much of the animal world including beetles and butterflies. We have many of these including a large number of his most sought after prints: hummingbirds. E-mail us at beachmap@sympatico.ca with requests and quotes. We also have a full range of finely coloured prints from Goldsmiths Animated Nature (c1840). There are many early (c1750) bizarre renditions of animals from newly explored places and a lot of these are in our possession. |
| Flowers | Some magnificent engraving and hand colouring of flowers was done in the copperplate era and some of these are now hugely expensive. For an inexpensive alternative to Dr. Thorntons Temple of Flora, but with exquisite engraving and rich, original hand colour, try our wide selection from Curtis Botanical Magazine. These copper engravings were published from 1787 and through the 1800s. We have a large selection of the early work between 1794 and 1832. Most are priced between $30 and $70, a small sum for nearly 200 year old art works. E-mail us at beachmap@sympatico.ca if you have a particular flower or colour in mind. |
| Other Subjects | We have many original hand coloured fashion plates from the 1830s on, published in France, England and the U.S. Military subjects include the Civil War, War of Independence, famous British battles, Napoleon , Nelson and Wellington, and a host of lesser known names. Whatever your interest, contact us by e-mail and we can provide a short list within two days. Please be specific. We cannot provide long, general lists and no longer issue catalogs, preferring to update our web page on a seasonal basis. Return to Home Page |
